On show will be the latest photo series by Jenny Burgos and a book project by Dorothy Robinson. Plus, the following artists will have their studios open: Austin Thomas, Jeff Hoppa, David Storey, Mahmoud Hamadani, Jan Kent, Theresa Ganz, Dorothy Robinson, Richard Jochum, Cui Fei, and more...

NOV 2009  |  NYC GREETING CARDS : PAINTINGS BY DEBRA SCHECHTER

Debra Schechter, NYC Greeting Cards The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 198834th Street and Fashion Ave, 1985

Original paintings by Debra Schechter. Classic New York City scenes, reproduced in limited edition greeting cards and special order giclée prints.

Debra Schechter worked during the 70's and 80's as a scenic artist and freelance painter, at the Metropolitan Opera and exclusive NYC hotels. She aspired to be a famous painter, but unfortunately she died prematurely at age 38. So her daughter Edie decided to show the world her talented mother's paintings, by selling reprints of the artworks. NYC Greeting Cards is this labor of love.

'Tis the season of holiday shopping, so we encourage you to spread the love, and browse the NYC Greeting Cards collections for your holiday cards this year! You'll get special cards to give to your friends and family, and you'll also be supporting local New York artists and entrepreneurs!

Debra Schecter's paintings and selected sketches are also available as special order giclée prints. Visit nycgreetingcards.com and use the zoom view to see all the intricate detail in each work.

NOV 2009  |  ERIN BANTA'S AMERICANA  PHOTOGRAPHY PORTFOLIO

Erin Banta, ford truck in flood lights. alma, nebraska 2006 Erin Banta, ford truck in flood lights. alma, nebraska, 2009

Erin Banta is an artist working in traditional film photography and ceramics, and is also a master color printer. We were happy to help Erin bridge the gap from film to digital by working with her to create her online portfolio, one of SugarHill's first custom portfolio websites!

After a few years of self-updating her site, Erin decided to completely revamp the site with a new look. She collaborated with us to get the new design and layout just right, and we recently launched Erin's new portfolio live!

Erin's work is inspired by how context shapes an exploration of the American lifestyle. She explores the idea that a person's environment is a mirror unto himself; the homes she photographs reflect the uniqueness of their inhabitants, culture, demographics, and climate. (Excerpt from artist's statement.)

Check out the Americana series and more at: erinbanta.com.

NOV 2009  |  BERKLEY GIRL NYC LAUNCHES NEW ONLINE STORE

Berkley Girl Online Store

Jen Bruder of Berkley Girl, a NYC clothing boutique for 'tween girls, came to us a year ago ready for a fresh site that would be exciting for the girls, and easily updatable. She loved the new site we made, and so did the girls!

Then the time came to expand her business into online shopping. We built a fully customized e-commerce store, designed to blend seamlessly with the rest of the site, for customers to shop and place orders. An admin interface makes it easy for Jen and the friendly Berkley Girl shopgirls, Glennes and Alyson, to update with the store's latest inventory.

Visit Berkley Girl for a fun selection of fashionably cute designer clothes and accessories for 'tween girls! Check out what's hot at: berkleygirl.com.

NOV 2009  |  BEGONIA SANTA CECILIA AT CCNY MFA OPEN STUDIOS

Begonia Santa Cecilia, Black Void, 2006 Begonia Santa Cecilia, Black Void, 2006, acrylic and oil on canvas

As we saw in last month's Harlem Open Artist Studio Tour, there's a strong and growing art scene uptown! We're thrilled to meet so many talented artists in the SugarHill neighborhood.

This week, the artists in the MFA Studio Art program at City College are showing their work in an Open Studios event. Among the participating artists is Begonia Santa Cecilia, a Spanish-born, NYC based painter. Begonia's paintings "depict shapes that resemble stems, leaves, grasses, trunks and other parts of plants formed through a combination of divergent representational strategies. The process is crucial." (Excerpts from artist's statement.)

Come check out what's happening around the Hill! Join the artists for an evening of wine and snacks. As Duke Ellington said, Take the A Train... the quickest way to Harlem! (Sung by Ella Fitzgerald.) A/D express to 145th St, or 1 train to 137th St.

OCT 2009  |  PAUL KENNEDY'S THE END OF THE DAY  BOOK LAUNCH

Piano Room, The End of the Day

The end of the day, by Paul Kennedy, Darling Publications, Cologne, 2009

Piano Room, The end of the day Front Walk, The end of the day Parlor Window, The end of the day AmericInn Night, The end of the day

Paul Kennedy's book of photographs is in the SugarHill News again! We're excited to finally see the images in print, after months of scanning the original 4x5 negatives and fine-tuning the color to Paul's precise eye. (More details...) Plus, the book itself is a work of art, arranged with a narrative quality.

Paul's monograph, The end of the day, features 31 color reproductions of his photographs made between 2004 and 2008 in his northeast Tennessee hometown. The pictures present a storyboard-like narrative, in which an 1856 house is salvage-demolished to make way for a hotel, which incorporates design elements from the house into its otherwise boxy, formulaic style — while, across town on another site, the old house is rebuilt as a pseudo-reproduction.

Pages of documentary material collected and edited by the artist — including archival photographs and texts, architectural drawings, site maps, and recent advertising — further develop the story with supplemental information drawn from the 19th century to the present. The historical material gives an alternative version of the story that implicitly questions the photographs' ostensible function as "documentary" evidence. (Excerpted from press release.)

A book launch event at Andreas Grimm Munchen gallery in Munich will feature a slideshow conversation about the project between the artist and Berlin-based curator Rafael von Uslar, followed by a book signing and reception. Limited edition prints, of works not included in the book, are to be released.

You can also find the 96-page, hardbound book in NYC at Dashwood Books, 33 Bond Street, Manhattan — and at other specialty bookstores soon.

OCT 2009  |  TERU KUWAYAMA AWARDED 2009 LANGE-TAYLOR PRIZE

Unnatural Borders, Open Wounds: The Human Landscape of Pakistan, by Teru Kuwayama and Christian Parenti IDP camp in Muzaffarabad, Pakistan-administered Kashmir, following earthquake, 2005

Teru Kuwayama, a freelance photojournalist based in NYC, has spent much of the past decade in war zones like Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. His documentary photography work has earned many awards and fellowships.

We're most impressed by Teru's work because of how his photos humanize people whom we often only hear of as "collateral damage" or insurgents. Scanning his film is a real treat!

Together with writer Christian Parenti, Teru won the 2009 Lange-Taylor Prize from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. This grant is given to encourage collaboration in documentary work. Their project, Unnatural Borders, Open Wounds: The Human Landscape of Pakistan, will explore Pakistan "through the lives of its myriad ethnic and tribal groups, and its vast population of refugees and displaced peoples."

Kuwayama and Parenti's project investigates the multi-faceted nature of Pakistani national identity and examines some of the underlying causes for the country's instability. "Our goal is to approach the complexity of this nation's history and its future through the individual portraits and histories of the people who have been swept across its borders." (Excerpt from the CDS proposal.)

An artist's talk featuring Teru will be held Friday, Oct 9th, 7pm, at the Center for Documentary Studies Gallery, Durham, NC.

Teru is also the cofounder of Lightstalkers, an online network of photographers, journalists, aid workers and other "unconventional travelers". He recently wrote an article of practical advice about the hazards of photographing in a war zone.

OCT 2009  |  RUTH RODRIGUEZ IN SMALL WORKS EXHIBITION

Kitschen Mom Square, Ruth Rodriguez Kitschen Mom Square, 12" x 12", oil, silkscreen and resin with paper on canvas

Ruth Rodriguez is a Dominican American artist, raised in NYC, who is infatuated with vibrant colors. We loved building her self-designed website, with textural pages from her sketchbook and a bold use of magenta!

Ruth's paintings concern various tangible and social phenomenon viewed through her life experiences, expressed with a collage-like style combining oil paint and silkscreen. She questions gender roles and stereotypes, the Kitsch, the expected and the unexpected.

Her work is featured in the Small Works Exhibition 2009 group show, along with over 30 CCNY alumni artists. At the SugarHill Client Works show last spring, Ruth's triptych attracted lots of attention, including an eager buyer! These pieces need to be seen up close and personal, to appreciate the depth and delicate detail of the built-up layers.

OCT 2009  |  MARILYN STEVENSON PHOTO EXHIBIT: IRIS FIELDS

Photographer Marilyn Stevenson's latest series, Iris Fields, is so pretty we almost want to smell the prints! We've enjoyed working with Marilyn for years, especially on her challenging maximum MB scans and retouching projects.

She's very active in the art world — always busy showing her own work, or coordinating others' shows as the assistant director of New Century Artists Gallery in NYC. She was a great help when we had our SugarHill group show there, and her baby elephant photo was right on-theme!

Iris Fields is a selection of 27 color photographs inspired by and photographed at the world renowned "Presby Memorial Iris Garden" in Montclair, New Jersey. Displaying the beauty of the iris reminds us of the pleasures of spring. The vision of the iris is a long lasting treat for the senses. Marilyn has created a photographic garden in bloom at the Levitas Center For The Arts. (Excerpt from press release.)

OCT 2009  |  BROOKE JACOBS + SUSAN KUHLMAN IN GONE TO THE DOGS

Brooke Jacobs and Susan Kuhlman, Dogs Susan Kuhlman, Dogs seriesBrooke Jacobs, Puppies series

These two passionate photographers, Brooke Jacobs and Susan Kuhlman, are each known for their endearing images of dogs.

Susan's documentary-style classic black and white images are influenced by her background as a researcher, photographer, and magazine photo editor. She says she loves capuring scenes of seemingly ordinary life and brief moments around NYC and then bringing them to life in the darkroom. We giggled a lot at the pictures of dogs while we were building Susan's website!

Brooke's intimate portraits of pets are inspired by her own love of animals. She applies her photography skills to publicize shelter animals in need of homes, showing the emotions, humor, and expressive sensibilities of these dogs and cats. Brooke's puppy photos were recently featured on marthastewart.com; see more at brookejacobs.com.

Both women are showing work in the group show Gone to the Dogs, a canine-themed exhibition featuring the work of 22 artists and 3 painting dogs! A portion of sales proceeds will benefit Animal Haven, a nonprofit organization that finds homes for abandoned cats and dogs throughout the Tri-State area.

OCT 2009  |  KIMSOOJA IN DRESS CODES: THIRD ICP TRIENNIAL

Kimsooja - Mumbai: A Laundry Field Mumbai: A Laundry Field, 2007-2008, video still, Dhobighat, Mumbai

Kimsooja is an international artist, born in Korea, based in NYC. We're honored that she trusted SugarHill with a major website overhaul and ongoing updates of this detailed online archive of her works from the past 25+ years.

Always on the move, Kimsooja explores the indefinable properties of fabric through video, sculpture, and installation. Her works often merge Eastern and Western traditions, observing and juxtaposing cultures and human conditions, investigating the common ground between the intimate and the universally global. (Excerpt from Kimsooja's press release.)

Kimsooja's four-channel video work Mumbai: A Laundry Field is a meditation on the ubiquity of brilliantly hued textiles in the Indian cityscape, and their place in the life of the city.

The theme of Dress Codes: The Third ICP Triennial of Photography and Video is fashion, and features 34 artists from 18 countries. The artists in this exhibition understand fashion as a form of social communication, and use costume, clothing, and disguise to create a rich visual language filled with specific references to history, culture, gender, and geography. (Excerpts from the ICP press release PDF.)

SEPT 2009  |  DUSTY ROSE VINTAGE SPOTLIGHTS SUGARHILL WORKS

Dusty Rose Vintage

Dusty Rose Vintage is an online vintage clothing store based in Brooklyn. Along with their great selection of stylish retro fashions, Dusty Rose is distinctive in their choice of displaying the clothes. They use 'real people' as models, and then interview them about their lives and their passions.

When we heard that Dusty Rose was looking for entrepreneurs and artists to feature in their photo shoots, we saw a fun opportunity to cross promote with fellow small business people. Plus, we admire how they add dimension to fashion images by featuring their models as individuals with colorful stories.

Check out the latest Dusty Rose Vintage items for sale online at Etsy, worn by Jenny and Ciel of SugarHill Works. Here's your chance to see a couple camera-shy photographers in front of the lens! See the Dusty Rose blog for our interviews.

Thanks to the Dusty Rose team for their good-humored enthusiasm, making our slightly embarrassing modeling debut a fun experience. After a sweet laugh, we think we'll stick to doing our production work, as the off-camera talent!

The Stewardesses, Harlem, 2005 The Stewardesses, Harlem, 2005

Photographer Lanie McNulty's exhibit Lifted Up in New York City will be on display in the Bronx. When Lanie participated in the SugarHill Client Works show last April, her print was one of the first to sell!

"Lifted Up in New York City is a gift from the people of New York City, people from all five boroughs, who had the courage and generosity to let me and my camera into a very private, sacred space," says Lanie. "It belongs back in their neighborhoods." Startling in their intimacy, the black and white images in [the show] compel viewers to trust in the possibility of joy and meaning in our troubled times. (Excerpt from Bronx Borough President's press release.)

This year, Livia was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship for her current photographic project about mass housing developments in Mexico. Two Million Homes for Mexico is a long-term study that reflects on the notions of home and community for the individuals living within the massive tract home developments that have recently sprouted all throughout Mexico.

AUG 2009  |  PAUL KENNEDY'S THE END OF THE DAY PHOTO BOOK

Paul Kennedy, Living Room Living Room, 2004

Paul Kennedy has just published his first book of photography, The End of the Day with Darling Publications in Cologne, Germany. We're excited to see the fruit of many months' labor!

The whole process of collaborating with Paul throughout this custom-tailored project was intriguing. Paul asked us to scan his 4x5 negatives and to color-correct them as precisely as possible using his darkroom prints as a guide — both for the CMYK printing of 31 color plates in the publication, and for future large-scale digital c-prints. You can zoom in to see the details of one of the scanned images from this photo series on our Scan Samples page.

SHW will also be building Paul's website, to be launched in the fall, in time for announcing book events in New York, Tennessee, and Munich. In the meantime, you can find his book in NYC at Dashwood Books, 33 Bond Street, Manhattan — and at other specialty bookstores soon.

Perbacco NYC Photo by Jade Hankinson, 2008

We've enjoyed working with Perbacco, a great little Italian restaurant and wine bar in the East Village, and Gnocco, their sister restaurant, for a while now, updating the menus and developing a new logo and website to enable them to reach out to more customers online. Here's the official email announcement owner Gian Luca sent out to all their customers:

We're pleased to announce the launch of the Perbacco website! Now you can browse our Dinner Menu, special Prix Fixe Tasting Menus, weekend Brunch Menu, and extensive Wine List. We're happy to offer this resource to you, our customers, and hope that you'll tell all your friends!

JUNE 2009  |  MEYERS ACUPUNCTURE NEW OFFICE ACCEPTING PATIENTS

Christopher Meyers, licensed acupuncturist and licensed massage therapist, has completed his rigorous NYS certification process, and recently moved into a new office space on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Meyers Acupuncture offers acupuncture, herbal medicine, and massage services, with a free 15-minute phone consultation for new patients.

The discipline of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine differs from Western medicine in that it recognizes that patients are all different, and therefore it's important to work in partnership with a patient to customize the treatment.

We've already heard so many glowing testimonials from Christopher's patients who have had positive results from only a few acupuncture treatments, after being unable to find a cure elsewhere! We highly recommend making an appointment; see meyersacupuncture.com for details of what to expect, and for contact info.

SugarHill Works image

Our first group show, SugarHill Client Works, was a sweet success and we're already excited to plan the next SugarHill show! This showcase of images by the talented folks who have helped our business grow over the past few years was on view at New Century Artists gallery, 530 West 25th St, Suite 406, Chelsea NYC, in April-May 2009.

The images in the above slideshow are our own submissions to the show, on the theme of "elephants & candy". Jenny Burgos, Sugar Packet; Ciel Mahoney, Earthly Delights; Dan Weisser, Untitled; Tan-ya Gerrodette, Shark's Cove.

If you'd like to see more great images by artists from the show, plus others, our clients page has links to their websites. You can also download the catalogue (PDF) here. Commission-free artwork is still for sale by the artists.

A big thanks to everyone who contributed their work and to those who helped us plan this fun event. Cheers to our sponsors: Bill Fauth of PEAK Advisors (specializing in helping creative people manage their talents and careers as a business), Azie Faison (author, songwriter, philosopher) and Josh Dirlam (patron of the arts).

When we founded SugarHill Works, we envisioned a business that would not only provide top-quality services, but also be active in supporting a vibrant community of artists. A few years down the road, we're still working hard and continue to be inspired by the talent of our diverse clientele. What better way to celebrate this progress towards our long-term goals than to showcase the work of the people who make it all possible?

— Jenny, Dan, Ciel, & Tan-ya

ONGOING, 2009  |  PEAK ADVISORS MONTHLY NETWORKING SEMINAR

When we met Bill Fauth, we initially thought he would just help us organize our accounting and get the taxes filed on time. We quickly realized he also offers something even more valuable: business advice and consulting services specially designed for artistically-oriented small business people.

Bill's a fan of acronyms: PEAK stands for Planning, Education, Advice, and Know-How. Each month, Bill Fauth and Kris Rajan of CoGrow Systems host a Networking and Business Development seminar, faciliating collaboration and networking among the participants. They also give practical advice and positive strategies for becoming a successful creative business person.

In describing who can benefit from the PEAK Advisors services, Bill employs another acronym, asking "Are you SAWSCEY?" As in Smart, Artistic, Wealth of ideas, Sexy/Savvy, Creatvie, Entrepreneurial, Yearn to express. We personally can't always remember what these clever phrases mean, but we definitely find the advice to be motivational, especially in these tough times.

If you're interested in attending the monthly seminar, usually on a Tuesday night from 6:30-9pm, RSVP to learn@billfauth.com for more info.
